$12,500 Settlement in D.C. Prisoner’s Negligent Maintenance Suit
The District of Columbia (D.C.) paid $12,500 to settle the lawsuit of prisoner Theodore Jones for injuries sustained for lack of proper maintenance.
While at the D.C. Jail on July 31, 2000, Jones was playing basketball on the recreation court when his foot landed on the edge of the court with missing and broken bricks. As a result he fractured his foot and severely dislocated his ankle, necessitating surgery and resulting in permanent disability.
His complaint alleged negligence for improper maintenance and repair of the inmate recreation area.
Jones accepted settlement on June 16, 2003. He was represented by Washington, D.C. attorney Douglas R. Sparks. See: Jones v. District of Columbia, Superior Court, District of Columbia, Case No. 2001 CA 008787 B.
